Understanding of Chinese culture from an Indian perspective

Many people wonder as to how the life of an Indian student in HONG KONG is. Being an International student following were some of my observations:

When we approach local students or people from Mainland China

Most of the people here I found seemed conservative at first glance but in reality they are very amicable. They are just shy to express themselves just because of the Language barriers and they love to keep things slow and steady. Generally Chinese people are very disciplined, sincere and traditional and if you really want to interact with them you need to break down your self made shell and come out of the cobweb around you.

Appreciate and respect their traditions and culture and they will respect you

Just don't try to approach girls or boys using any social networking website especially Facebook also it is banned in Mainland. They believe in Personal touch and trust a person who speaks directly to whatever they have in mind rather than hiding around the bush and playing mind games.

They are very humble

They might be the expert in their fields or may be in a top position but still they don't like to boast and exaggerate about their skills or Position. Don;t underestimate them due to their politeness or humble nature.

Never publicize

They don't like to publicize about their achievements or excellence like we post even a small achievement on Facebook.

Right on Time

They are very well organized and love to do things on time. Be it government offices, University officials, Government buses, Public MTR or an individual, everything is right on time and people are civic minded.

Believe in Humanity not religion

They don't believe much in religion rather they believe in Humanity and trust in excellence. I believe that is one of the reason for such a rapid development of China. People believe in hard work as their Prayer and office space as their temple.

INFERIOR or SUPERIOR

Went to a mall, saw an old friend of mine, She looked damn pretty and suddenly I felt quite inferior. She was the perfect beauty with milky white skin, matching sandals and handbag and a branded dress.  Old jeans with a faded T-shirt, Slippers and shabby hairs with an average height is how someone can describe me. Suddenly I felt I should hide myself from her and to make sure that she did not see me. When I went back home, I  pledged to keep myself clean and better dressed. The same day I bought myself a new pair of clothes, a Watch, a hair gel and a pair of shoes. I dressed up and was so confident that I realized that I was calling my friends to go out and have fun which was otherwise vice versa.

  • Most of the people feel conscious about their looks when they go out with opposite sex and feel comfortable when they go out with very close friends or from the same gender.
  • 70% People spent their hard earned money to impress people they don't even know or do not care about even when they are short of finances.
  • Comparing to others is another way to showoff and make the other person feel inferior.
On the other hand if you don't express yourself properly chances of failure increases. There are various forms of expressions. It might be your looks, your personality ,your communication skills, your attitude or your attire.

How can I balance myself between Showoff and Good personality?

1. Set your limits

Looking good is important as it is the weapon which helps you to get your first impression right but Looking good is not the only weapon which sets your image. Dress properly according to the occasion but never ever do anything which is over the limits. Remember Simplicity is always the best beauty. Avoid spending extravagantly for a look which hides your natural beauty.

2. Always keep yourself clean

When was the last time you had bath, you shaved or ironed your Shirt? Keeping things what you have neat and clean is the best way to avoid spending too much and you yourself will feel confident and fresh.

3. Accept what you are.

Most of the people try to pretend according to the person they are meeting with. Always be yourself and accept what you are.

4. Always be Confident

Confidence is the best jewelry a person should wear whenever you are meeting/facing anyone. Even if you lack the required skills, confidence might bring the trophy home.

5. Always approach first

Be amicable and approachable but always try to approach first. It will reflect your down to earth attitude and your friendly nature irrespective of thinking about how the other person will react. He might be thinking the same as you are.
